Hello! My name is Jenn Waugh and I’m a journalist based in Halifax. This is where I keep the stories I’m most proud of.
I usually tell people I’m from Nova Scotia, but I’ve only been here since 2018. I was born in Gwangju, South Korea and moved to Brunei shortly afterwards. I spent most of my childhood in the United Arab Emirates, about an hour outside of Dubai. Since moving to Canada, I’ve noticed everyone has a story about how they find belonging in their communities. That’s what makes me so passionate about storytelling.
I hold a journalism degree from the University of King’s College, where I interned at CBC Mainstreet NS. I also have a degree in Social Justice and Community Studies from Saint Mary’s University. My education was all about figuring out who wasn’t in the story, whether it be in non-profit policy making or a headline, and figuring out the best way to include them.
After graduating from King’s, I worked at CKDU 88.1 FM, Dalhousie’s campus radio station. I filled an hour-long radio show, hosted interviews in-studio and in the field and filed a top-of-the-hour news segment every night. I got a chance to do a little bit of everything.
Outside of journalism, I work on Halifax Pride’s operations team as the Event Producer. I do anything, from picking up garbage to filing for permits to managing the load in of over 60 vendors in three hours. It’s a loud, dynamic Festival Site that keeps me constantly problem-solving to run fun, meaningful events.
